Are you turning 26?
In New Jersey, under the Get Covered NJ platform, a dependent can remain on their parents health insurance plan until the end of the calendar year in which they turn 26 years old. After that, they are generally no longer eligible to listed as a dependent and must secure their own health insurance coverage.
However, New Jersey state law extends coverage for dependents up to age 31 under certain conditions if the plan offers this option. To qualify for this extension:
- The dependent must be unmarried and without children.
- They must live in New Jersey or be a full-time student.
- They must not be covered under any other group or individual health insurance plan.
If they lose coverage at 26 this qualifies as a Special Enrollment Period. allowing them to enroll in their own plan outside the Open Enrollment.
